Hello all my Loverlees! Hope the New Year is gaining fabulous-ness momentum for you!
I am honored to have been featured on the website Careers In Fashion. It really is truly an honor because I am in the company of some serious heavies in the fashion blogosphere, such as the magnanimous Susie Bubble of Style Bubble, Fashion Indie, Painfully Hip, written by renowned wardrobe stylist and fashion editor Amber Mortensen, and Igor + Andre, product of fashion illustrator extraordinaire, Danny Roberts.

Careers in Fashion by their own account is "an up and coming educational portal, focusing on fashion careers. We are trying to give realistic and accurate information to potential students. In the near future, we will have more local schools listed and more ways to contact them." The list was compiled in order to "help potential students find out what it’s like on the front lines of the fashion industry...we feel the best way to do this is by featuring blogs for fashion, by people actually in fashion." How cool is this?!

The type of vision that designer Vicente Rey holds is extremely rare. With mass production taking a foothold on the fashion industry, to see this type of artistry is refreshing.

Vicente was born in Galicia, Spain and his experience as a fashion phenom began at an early age. He made his debut in Barcelona as a trainee, designing costumes for stage, dance programs and short films. His first shoe collection made from curved iron was presented as his graduation project.

A winner of numerous awards, Vicente is the recipient of the Escarpin de Cristal, "New Designer Award" (Sept. 2001) and the Footwear Designer Award (2003) in the ANDAM
(National Association for the Development of Fashion Arts), which was organized by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.

I can't begin to describe this young designer's shoes. The clarity with which he sees and develops his product is astonishing. He is a true artist; to call him simply a designer seems like the ultimate misnomer. His creations are so far above what we knowingly call design; they captivate the mind and open the fashion psyche to new dimensions in the concept of footwear.

For those of you who have never heard of him, get ready to have your hair blown back. For those of us in the know, let us enjoy and have our hair blown back yet again by the creations of this genius extraordinaire in the area of fashion footwear, Vicente Rey. C'est bien!

Janelle Monae on Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed List

Hello all my Loverlees! Hope you all had a simply smashing weekend. Well, back to the grind on Monday moanin', at least for some of us. I'll just be turning over. But I can't laugh too hard, next week is my last week at home. I will return to my own grind on Monday, August 22 (just found that out today, ain't that a kick in the head)?

Oh well, I thought I'd share some great news about one of my favorite fashion icons, Ms. Janelle Monae. The September issue of Vanity Fair features her on their 72ND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL BEST DRESSED LIST! As far as I'm concerned, she is more than deserving. Monae's style is eclectic, funky, and fly. She exudes old Hollywood glamor with an edge. Many people have dissed her style, calling it boring, weird, and outdated (outdated, are you kidding me?)and she is anything BUT boring. What I think a lot of young people don't appreciate is the fact that she actually is wearing clothes! I'm glad she's not listening to the nay-sayers. Monae's style is what it is and she wears it very well!

A few weeks ago, I wrote a little blurb about the Gilt Groupe collaboration with designer Alexandre Birman. Little did I know that I would receive a beautiful pair of the designer's shoes as compensation. But, lo and behold, three days later I received a Fedex package in the mail. So, today, I'm posting my lovely acquisitions for all the fashion blog-world to see. They are indeed beautiful. The color is a neutral, sort of rose, and they are soft as a baby's bottom! I know, I know, what a cliche, huh?

Not only did I receive these gorgeous kicks, but I later received a press release with a picture of Jennifer Lopez sporting a pair of the designer's shoes. How cool is that? Great company to be in, don't you think? So do I.

Okay, enough talk. Here are my beautifully lovely shoes. Enjoy and I can't wait to go somewhere special to wear them. Maybe I'll post the outfit...we'll see...

Hollywood Queen of Glamor, Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79

A star on her own terms, the legendary Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday morning at the age of 79 from a lengthy bout with Congestive Heart Failure. As a young child growing up, I thought that Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. I remember going to the movies to see Cleopatra (my mother loved epic films) and will never forget her famous entrance into the city dressed in gold regalia. Aside from the aforementioned, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, and Suddenly Last Summer are my favorite Elizabeth Taylor films. My mom, also named Elizabeth, shared stories of the actress' many romances and marriages and she used to always say "if Mike Todd (her third husband) had lived, she'd (Liz) still be married to him."

I don't know about that, but I do know this...Hollywood has lost one of the last great legends of cinema and I am certain those beautiful violet eyes and the fabulously "bad girl" personality behind them will be missed.

Golden Globes going Green?

I don't watch award shows. I think they're pompous, boring, and much much too long. But I do like the red carpet events that take place before the shows. After that, I usually click onto something far more interesting, like Spongebob Squarepants...

Last night's event was no different, in fact, once I found out that the Transformers movie was on, that was it. I was off to cheer for Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots.

So my information on the 68th Annual Golden Globes is completely derived from E!News this morning. In celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday, I get to add one more day to my long weekend, so here I am at ye ole' keyboard, banging out my thoughts on red carpet trends.

This year the red carpet went green...literally. In a sea of black and neutrals, this was a welcomed change. My favorite was Catherine Zeta Jones, who looked fabulous in a Monique Lhuillier emerald gown and extremely happy with the news of husband Michael Douglas being cancer free. Good for them!

I am 52 years old. And at the age of 52, I have mellowed quite a bit when it comes to fashion trends and styles. I'm talking about me, no one else. I believe in age appropriate dressing and just because you have a great figure is no reason to let us see ALL of it. I know that I'm probably in the minority on this one, but like I said, this is just me.

I thank God for His never leaving me to fend for myself. I've been in that place, and it's not a very pleasant situation. In the past year, I've faced disappointments, triumphs, fear of the unknown, and anticipation of the future. I am thankful to come through it with my mind in tact. God has been there for me every step of the way, and I am most grateful for His faithfulness to me, even when I wasn't my most faithful to Him. I thank Him for loving me, even during my most unlovable times. I thank Him for keeping me, even when I didn't want to be kept. And I thank Him for the unmeasurable gift of the life of His dear Son, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

This coming year is another chance for me to get it right. To gain momentum in the journey to my destiny. To taste new treats, and to venture into new territory. I'm hoping to leave the country for awhile. My destination of choice is London, England. I hope to make it there either in the summer or fall of 2011. I pray that God will grant me His blessing to sail uncharted waters.

For all of you, my readers and dare I say, my friends, who have stuck with me even when I was abandoned by inspiration, to you I say thank you and I hope you'll continue the journey with me. May 2011 bring you great peace, prosperity, and the realization of your dreams.

Carine Roitfeld leaves French Vogue

Happy Monday, everyone. Hope you all had a wonderful and fashionable weekend.

I'm sure many of you have already heard about Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue announcing on last Friday her plans to step down after a decade as Editor-in-Chief of the iconoclastic publication.

Though many in the industry were surprised by what seemed to be a "sudden" move by Ms. Roitfeld, the lady herself gave us a window into her future plans while the subject of a fashion profile featured in New York magazine's spring 2008 fashion issue. According to the self-proclaimed fashion stylist, she has never been too keen on the business aspect of the fashion world and was quoted as saying "my best quality is to be a stylist. I never think about this career, this big job...I never wanted to be what I am today, and I will not die in the position."

Since Roitfeld's arrival ten years ago, French Vogue has experienced uncanny success, both editorially and in garnering top advertisers. In addition, the magazine has seen it's circulation increase at an astounding rate, according to Conde Nast International chief executive, Jonathan Newhouse.

Roitfeld, who will stay on until January 2011, insists that there is no career based motivation behind her leaving. She merely thinks it's time for her to "do something different" and wants to leave while still at the top of her game. At the top, indeed; the style maven has never been one to shun the spotlight and is as much known for her own personal style as she is for her incredible ability to style others.

No doubt, she will be missed by all who had the opportunity to work with such a brilliant personality, and I for one am waiting with bated breath to see what Roitfeld's next move will be. Below are some of my favorite Roitfeld fashion moments in time:

It's so good to be back in the swing of things. My internet is back up and, boy, have I missed communicating with you guys. It's been kind of rough financially these past few months, but I'm finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Whooga Ugg Boots

I just received my first pair of Ugg Boots in the mail today, courtesy of a very nice gentleman by the name of Michael Hodge. His online store is Whooga.com.

I've never featured Ugg boots on FA'SHOE'NISTA, because unlike celebrities such as Ashley Simpson and Kate Hudson, I don't see them as being particularly stylish. You would never catch me wearing a pair with a mini skirt or a pair of shorts. I see them as strictly functional. They keep your feet incredibly warm. This is my inaugural pair, so since I haven't done much more than try them on, and I don't plan on wearing them until the snow hits the ground, the most I can do is give you a little background on the company. I'll be back to review the boots once I've seen how they hold up in a Michigan winter!

Whooga is an Australian company that uses authentic Australian merino fleece. Manufacturing and shipping are both done in and from China. According to Michael, all major ugg labels, including UGG Australian, are manufactured in China now. One of the things you learn when you visit the website, which is very user friendly, is that there are many alternative brands of ugg boots available. I didn't know that and I find that fact very interesting. Normally you think Ugg boots--Australia--period. I like the fact that the company believes an informed consumer is the best consumer. Whooga not only wants to sell you a pair of boots, but they strive to inform you of the quality you should expect from your purchase. As far as shipping goes, my wait wasn't terribly long--maybe about a week and a half. The longest it should take is 14 days.

I love the feel of the outside of the boots. They are very soft. They slide right on and feel absolutely wonderful! They are so warm that I immediately had to take them off (it's almost 90 degrees today):) I'm sure I'll be ready for the winter!

Inspiration: Janelle Monae: I need you to stay in the Tuxedos...

Today, I was re-introduced to a fireball of funkilicious talent in the form of Janelle Monae. My good friend and fellow illustrator, the fabulous Vanessa Brantley Newton of Ooh La La Design Studio has a wonderful video of Janelle's latest submission to the annals of cool-jazz funkdom, "Tightrope," from the new CD "ArchAndroid." To behold this breath of fresh air in a sea of pop culture redundancy, head on over here and check out the video.

I first witnessed this dynamo of dance on a hip-hop fashion show of some kind on BET a few months ago. I don't remember much else other than Janelle's performance and how I was awestruck by her style, talent and ability to take me to another place in time musically. I saw Harlem Renaissance Cotton Club, Detroit local cool jazz club, Baker's Keyboard Lounge, the fancy footwork of James Brown, and the "hi-de-hi's," "ho-deho's, frenetic stylings of Cab Calloway all rolled up in this one tiny, well dressed body.

The Kansas City, Kansas native was born Janelle Monae Robinson on December 1, 1985. The 24 year old has traveled the globe, touring with the likes of Erykah Badu and No Doubt to such exotic locations as Istanbul, Berlin, Moscow and back on American soil to New York. She has also realized "one of the most important signings of my career," by Sean "Diddy" Combs.1 Not bad for one who has barely spent a quarter of her life on this planet.

Dressed in ankle length tuxedos with slightly larger than normal bow ties, patent leather two-toned oxfords, and one of the coolest hair styles this side of the 50's, Janelle slides across the floor with the ease of a seasoned pro. Always the innovator, she stretched her toe tapping talents by performing two years ago, white tutu and all, with the Atlanta Ballet in a production called "BIG." (See above video)

A new Venture

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a wonderful Friday's Eve! I am once again, trying my hand at another artistic venture. Fashion, as you well know by visiting this blog, is a great passion of mine. So now I am looking to enter into another facet of the industry, fashion illustration.

I wanted to give everyone a sneak peek into my new arena with my first sketch of the beautiful Scarlett Johansson. I did this little doodle while at lunch on my job and am really pleased with it. Plus, it was very therapeutic, an escape from the loud unruly noises of a middle school. So I hope you all enjoy my little creation and I promise to keep you posted on new work.

YAAAAY! The SATC girls are back with a vengeance. Oh, how I look forward to the clothes, the exotic locations, and the shoes, the shoes, and the shoes!

Oh, and lest I forget, did I mention the SHOES?!

All of the women's styles are fabulous, but I just have to say that my favorite is, of course, Ms. Sarah Jessica Parker/Carrie Bradshaw. I absolutely love this picture and this look. It is funky, hip (are we still using that word?), and all her own. The bright pink cropped sweater is just the right amount of color, the big scarf adds a euro-flair, and her signature Fedora finalizes the look, pulling it all together in fabulous SJP style! Her small frame carries layering well and this ensemble seals her place in the anals of fashion as one to watch both on and off the silver screen.

Inspiration: Interview with Interior Designer, Yahgie

Petergaye (Yahgie) Kisielewicz

I found Yahgie (full name Petergaye S. Kisielewicz) on the We Love Etsy site. I immediately fell in love with her eclectic style and talent. Her nickname (?) and the name of her blog is Yahgie (pronounced yah-gee), A Daily Inspirational Journal by Petergaye S. Kisielewicz, and means "elegant gathering." This is very fitting since that is exactly what her interiors imply: beautiful spaces where the elite gather to sip tea or champagne, as they admire their elegant surroundings.
FA'SHOE'NISTA! is very happy that Yahgie took time out of her very busy schedule to give us insight into her creative world.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: From where do you hail originally?
Yahgie: I am originally from Jamaica with a blend of different ethnic backgrounds.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What prompted you to settle in Miami?
Yahgie: I love living in the Miami area because the weather is always nice and I get to wear flip-flops year round.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What made you decide on interior design?
Yahgie: I knew interior design was my passion at a very young age. I could not picture myself doing anything else.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Is it hard to break into this field? What did you do early in your career to build a clientele?
Yahgie: It was not hard for me to break into the design field. I think that as long as you have that creative passion, you can make it. My first job at the age of 16 was working for a decorator. That allowed me to build my clientele.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Color seems to play a major role in your designs. Even if your palette is primarily neutral, you always manage to infuse a pop of color in your spaces. What inspires your choice of color?
Yahgie: Growing up on an island and living in the Miami area, I am always surrounded by color. The majority of the colors I’ve chosen for my designs are colors from my everyday life or my childhood memories.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Are other members of your family creative as well? Who, inside or outside of your family, inspires you the most?
Yahgie: My family has a few creative people from an artist to a cartoon animator. It’s hard to say who has inspired me the most because there are so many great artists out there. People that inspired me the most are Beverly Wasile, Andy Warhol, Le Corbusier and Olle Eksell.

FA'SHOE'NITSA: I can certainly see the Warhol influence, particularly in your designer pillows. Any design nightmares you care to share with us?
Yahgie: My most fearful design nightmare is giving up my passion to live someone else’s dream.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Your blog is vibrant, inspiring, informative, and even somewhat philosophical. Do people contact you often with questions about how to get started in this business?
Yahgie: I do get questions from people about going into the interior design field. I always tell them, “Be prepared to break a lot of nails because this field is not a glamorous one.”

FA'SHOE'NISTA: You also design patterns for fabric. Were you doing this early in your career, or is this a more recent endeavor? Yahgie: Designing fabrics is a new endeavor for me. A lot of my interior design projects are custom designs. Designing furniture and accessories is not new to me.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What other home décor items do you create?
Yahgie: In the future, the possibilities are endless, but for now I design pillows, fabrics, wall-art, tableware, and wallpaper.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Your spaces are beautiful, stylish, and functional. Does the client's personality play a part in your creative process or does he or she rely solely on your expertise?
Yahgie: My client’s personality plays a big role in my creative process. I am a big fan of color; often my clients do not feel the same.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: It's easy to see that you are just as beautiful and as stylish as your creations. Has anyone ever had a hard time taking you seriously as a business woman?
Yahgie: I find people always over look me or underestimate the passion I have for what I do. But, I love that ….because that makes me feel like an underdog. As an underdog, you must always fight to rise above and be different from the crowd in order to be noticed. So, being taken seriously by people doesn’t bother me, it just means I need to keep fighting.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Any advice for creative souls longing to break out of the 9 to 5 and into loving what they do and doing what they love?
Yahgie: Always ask “Why,” be positive in all that you do, and take baby steps everyday towards something you love to do.

Inspiration: Kate Spade

I love Kate Spade. Whimsical, colorful, and just plain fun, her fashions fit the easy going fun loving woman who doesn't mind adding a little zing to her professional wardrobe (even the models' poses are fun). In a sea of black, brown, and gray, a bright colored cardigan with a soft, tweed skirt stands out with flair and infuses a welcomed change of season. Out with the cold, in with the cool, smooth, and mellow hues of spring!

Kate, whose maiden name was Brosnahan, launched her eclectic line Kate Spade New York with husband, Andy Spade, in 1993. The accessories market has never been the same. PRADA: Inspiration

It's hard for me not to envision the stunning Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada, whenever I see the designs of Miuccia Prada. She is daring; a risk taker who knows how to drape the female form with grace and a touch of the razor's edge.

It's no wonder that Neiman Marcus has included Prada in its The Art of Fashion series. Miuccia Prada is a true artist in every sense of the word. Inspiration: It's the Weekend! Again...

Time is such an incredible thing. It goes by so fast, yet and still we continually wish it away with statements like, "boy, I can't wait till Friday gets here" or "it's only a month till my next vacation, I'm counting down the days..."

So today, I'm slowing down a little and sharing more of what inspires me to create. And lately, I've needed a great deal of inspiration. Dealing with new meds from my doctor that are taking my body through all sorts of changes, (drowsiness, dizziness, lethargy, and the like)has really taken its toll for the last couple of months. All I can say is that I'm tired of being tired!

But enough about my shortcomings, lets get down to the wire. It's kind of hard to imagine the perfect shoes without the perfect bag to carry all those fashionable necessities. So here are my pics for those things which inspire me. Feast and enjoy!

Hello, my Loverlees! Well, we are almost to the end of February and ever closer to the coveted Spring season.

Fresh flowers, fresh air, and beautifully fresh and airy colors brighten up our wardrobe as we begin to put away the heavy coats, jackets, boots, and scarves for a lighter more ethereal color palette.

Burberry has added pastels to its lineup for spring fashion and has also refurbished the plaid that the line is known for. Ruching, folding, and crisscrossing, coupled with what I call "blonde" hues captivate the eye and bring a softer, earthy, more bohemian feel to the usually edgy, urban designs of Burberry. Legendary Designer Alexander McQueen Dies at age 40

Legendary British Designer, Alexander McQueen was found dead today in his London home. He was 40 years young.

To say that McQueen was a brilliant designer would be the understatment of the century. Dressing the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Sara Jessica Parker, and too many more stars and fashion icons to mention in this small space, McQueen had clearly made a name for himself with style mavens and fashion critics alike.

Known for his extravagant and theatrical fashion shows, McQueen often mixed elements of design and technology to bring a futuristic twist to the runway.

Circumstances surrounding McQueen's death are still cloudy, although it has been reported that he was extremely despondent over the death of his mother on February 2nd. McQueen recently made obscene comments on his Twitter page and claimed that he'd had an "awful week" but that he would try to pull himself together and "finish."

Coming days before London Fashion Week, an event he had not attended in recent years, McQueen's death has shocked and riveted the fashion world.

McQueen trained in his early days at Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design, an institution known to encourage young, British designers and for its innovative, fashion-forward approach. He gained expertise in meticulous men's tailoring from Anderson and Sheppard and Gieves and Hawkes, two well-known Savile Row establishments. Extremely ambitious, McQueen arrived at Anderson and Sheppard at the tender age of 16.

After his training, McQueen soon developed his elaborate, theatrical trademark, and the rest, as the well known cliche' states, is history. His reputation for innovation, and at times, the bizarre, stayed with him until his death.

Alexander McQueen's success inspired many of today's young designers and his legacy of fine detail, meticulous design, and other worldly creations, is sure to live on for many generations to come.

So far I've only completed two designs, but I thought now would be as good a time as any. It's sort of like, I have to design and complete these handbags. Isn't strange how often we have to literally find ways to force ourselves to do the very things we love to do. Time, life, and everything else seems to get in the way of our creativity and we often find ourselves fighting to do what we love and to love what we do.

Red Carpet Chic: The Grammys

Okay, I'll admit, I have a short attention span for award shows. I haven't watched one for more than 5 minutes for years now, and I don't intend to start any time soon. But I do like to see what everyone wore on the Red Carpet after the fact. So my pick for favorite Red Carpet look is, drum roll please...Pink!

While I don't listen to her music, I have followed her changing trends over the years. If Madonna is the Queen of Reinvention, Pink is surely bringing up the rear and moving fast toward the throne.

I love Pink. I remember watching an E! documentary of her life and everything she's gone through. I admire her tenacity, her sheer will to keep going in spite of all sorts of family trials and personal obstacles. She's not perfect and never claimed to be. She is not your everyday, run of the mill Pop Diva, she is a real woman with real issues who happens to have a stellar voice and a banging physique.

Pink is a home girl with heart. She is stylish without being too trendy, edgy without being too extreme, and lately, she's just been down right glamorous. So my hat's off to Pink as FA'SHOE'NISTA's pick for Best Red Carpet Look. Let's get this party started!

Inspiration - Gucci's Edge

Hello all my Loverlees. Hope your year has gotten off to a running and successful start.

Please forgive the sparsity of my postings, I'm trying to get organized in 2010. I've got some new ideas and I'm working to get them started. In the meantime, here is the first of my "Inspiration" posts for 2010.

You'd pretty much have to live in an underground barn not to recognize the name of Gucci as one of fashion's longest running powerhouses. Through the years, Gucci has brought cutting edge fashion to the forefront, which in my opinion, is not easy to do when dealing with branded and signature logo apparel. In the Trenches

Fashion news alert! Trench coats are back....Again.

Did they every really leave us? How can a fashion staple such as the eons classic trench every go out of style? Not possible I suppose. And I must admit, anything that makes you look like a secret agent's got my vote.

Trench coats are as famous as the stars who wore and continue to wear them. Remember Bogie and Ingrid Bergman, Hepburn (as in Katherine), Peter Falk's Columbo? Okay, his was kinda rumpled, but still a trench just the same.

Fast forward to the present. Designers have reworked the classic trench with a number of added twists. Sleeves and bottom halves are suddenly missing in action. Ruffles, pastel colors, stripes and all sorts of embellishments give today's modern fashionista choices that would make Bogie blush and Lt. Columbo want to further his investigation.

It's December everyone! Where did the year go?! Isn't that the question that begs answering every year? When we think of years in abstract terms, such as, "I'll have to pay on that bill for five years before paying it off," or, "30 year Mortgage," it just seems like such a long time to wait. But when we reduce the future to "one year at a time," or even "one day at a time," the time seems to accelerate and before we know it, it's Christmas and we're about to enter into a new year.

What have you accomplished toward your dreams this past year? I know it's been difficult for me, but even so, I've managed to accomplish more toward my writing, fashion, and art goals this year than I have in many years past put together. With prayer and determination, I found out exactly what I'm capable of doing with the help of the Lord and through the power of God in my life. I have been inspired by many of you and are immensely grateful for all of your comments and visits to my little fashion blog.

FA'SHOE'NISTA is just getting started. This past year, I have expanded to include clothing as well as other accessories in an attempt to broaden the spectrum of my knowledge of what's stylish and functional for today's fashion savvy woman. In the coming year, I will endeavor to include men's fashion and my own personal style and taste. "Inspiration" will be a major component to future posts and I hope to feature more independent designers and artisans in an effort to expose them to a wider audience. I'll also be launching a campaign for subscribers, so please, please, please subscribe to FA'SHOE'NISTA so that I may solidify my numbers for future advertisers. There will be more in depth articles, giveaways, and all sorts of goodies in the coming year.

Inspiration: Street Style Aesthetic; The Chic on the Street photography of Wayne Tippetts

Early on in my budding fashion career interests, I was an avid photographer. I thought of myself as pretty savvy when it came to seeing what others couldn't necessarily see, new fashion trends, the next new ingenue on the catwalk, and so on...

I was in college at the time, so I did have some extra minutes on my hands to wander the streets of Downtown Detroit and the neighborhoods, scouting out fashionable young ladies to shoot for my portfolio.

Fast forward to now and my new budding interest in street photography. In an effort to keep my blog current and fly enough (did I just say that?) and to convince my ever expanding readership to make return visits, I look for blogs, people, places, artists, stylists, and the like that will inspire me to follow my fashion dreams. In my research, I've found that there are essentially two kinds of inspiration, at least for me: there's the inspiration that inspires me to keep looking for inspiration, and then there's true inspiration, the kind that compels me to get up, to move, and to create.

Wayne Tippetts falls in the second category and is my new street style photography hero. His pictures have a simple elegance that don't look rehearsed or staged. Just fashionable people who are captured by his style conscious lens. Many of his photos are a window into the subject's personality without being intrusive or pushy. Two of his luscious photos of my favorite fashion muse, Marian Kihogo, are in a previous "Inspiration" post. The photo that Wayne so graciously allowed me to feature for this week's "Inspiration" is of Harpers Bazaar's Editor-at-Large, Kim Hersov.

Hello, all my Loverlees! This week for my Inspiration, I am honored to feature my stylish blog buddy and sister-friend, the infamous Marian Kihogo. She is the ultimate uber stylist, writer, and all around fashion icon. There is no way that I could deny the fact that she has been a huge inspiration to me as far as the direction my fashion blog is taking. She is beautiful, daring, smart, brilliant, and, well...you get the picture. Here is a mini interview with my girl. Hope you enjoy!

FA'SHOE'NISTA: Just in case there are some folks who may not know, from where do you hail?

MK: I grew up in the UK but I am originally from Ghana, West Africa.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: You are what we in fashion blog land consider to be the epitome of style, grace, and poise. Fashion is truly a calling for you. When did you first notice the itch for all things stylish?

MK: Thank you for that amazing compliment!
Wow I wish I could say there was a specific moment when it began but there was no ‘aha’ moment.

My Mother is a fine artist and her mother before her, so I was always surrounded with great design, Art, and a thirst for the creative.

As far back as I can remember, I was painting, re-purposing garments, writing and simply creating in various forms…

During my childhood my younger sister (poor girl!) was my ‘in house’ model if you like :o) I was always using her as my mannequin, sewing pieces and styling her in my make believe themed fashion shows, etc. Lol!

In junior high school, I then styled a friend’s mother informally. She was hosting a business dinner, had bought a terrific dress, but the only problem was it was not terrific on her. It did nothing for her proportions and figure. I was round my friends house hanging out, witnessed her mother melt down in the ‘not so right dress for her,’ and customized the piece right there and then for her with an hour to go till the guests arrived.

The customized piece and accessories I pulled from her amazing wardrobe were a hit, and more importantly my friend’s mother exuded a confidence that made her the belle of the ball. She passed my name to all her contacts, the rest as they say is history ;o).

At that time I didn’t realize that it was styling I was in effect doing but I did know that I had to do this for life. I have felt this way about fashion writing too. While styling and writing is when I am at my happiest, it has always just made sense. It’s the piece to my puzzle.

FA'SHOE'NISTA:Your fashion savvy is evident in the pictures you post of your various looks. Your style is eclectic and always fresh. How much are you influenced by the people you work with? Who influences you the most?

MK: My style is a product of who I am and my experiences to date.

In terms of my clients, each is completely unique in their tastes. I find the process of styling them all inspiring.

I am mostly inspired by people (clients and non clients) who are unapologetic in their personal style, whatever it may be.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: You often work with the beautiful and talented actress and model, Tolula Adeyemi. I love seeing pictures of the two of you together at various functions. You always manage to look fabulous. I know you've styled her for various photo shoots and the red carpet. When did you two first meet?

MK: At work. We met at a feature Dirrty Glam magazine shoot (I work as the magazine’s UK Correspondent)as shot by award winning photographer, David Yeo and styled by myself.

The magazine was shooting her that day for its ‘Closet Confidential’ feature, it’s a piece that gives readers a glimpse into the amazing wardrobes of style icons and muses.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: How involved is she in the styling process? Do you two bounce ideas off of each other?

MK: Oh 100%!! Anyone who knows Tolula knows that she puts 200% into everything she does. She is highly creative, has an innate sense of true style, and is not afraid of the highly conceptual.

We do bounce ideas off each other a lot during the styling process as we have the same vision, are like minded style wise, and have a great rapport.

She is incredibly easy to style as I know what she likes. I always have her input and she is a pleasure to work with, and is an incredible canvas. Oh, and literally everything works on her!

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What is considered a great day for you?

MK: One which is productive! I am a bit of workaholic so I like to be busy! Oh, if I leave a client happy, that is always wonderful too.

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What's a lousy day for you?

MK: Ah that is a hard one, as even the most challenging are always fun!

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What is your favorite color?

MK: Not a fair question! There are too many to choose from. (laughing) Can I be cheeky and pretty please choose two?

Firstly, Purple. There is something about it that is simultaneously elegant, royal and rebellious (dependent on texture, cut and styling) all in one go.

Black for its dynamism, I have a manic love and hate affair with this color. I either completely ignore it or go for heady overdoses of the color!

FA'SHOE'NISTA: What is your definition of style?

MK: It is a true reflection of one’s personality through their garments, accessories and attitude.

It is that which shines through an outfit be it a thousand dollar designer dress or a thrifted ensemble that cost only a few bucks.

Interview with Handbag Designer Sandra P. Medina

As a self-proclaimed fashion aficionado, I am always on the prowl for the new, innovative, and the edgy. Handbag Designer 101 is one of my favorite places to look for new talent.

The exquisite, hand-painted designs of Sandra P Medina are a meticulous fusion of art and fashion. Beautifully constructed and saturated with rich colors, these detailed works of “functional art” are a fresh alternative in a sea of today’s mass produced handbag “trends.”

Ms. Medina graciously agreed to share her expertise with FA’SHOE’NISTA regarding her wonderful creations.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Your bags are nothing short of detailed works of art. What inspires you?
SM: I used to have inspiration from topics that I like or admire because I need to have an emotional attachment with my inspiration point. In this case, the group Pink Floyd, my favorite band, inspired my first collection and I used to catch my emotions from their songs. For that reason, I called my collection Psychedelic Handbags, because I found the colors and shapes so aesthetic. In the early days of Pink Floyd this theme was used to ambient the scenery at UFO`S bar. Also, the contrast of strong and harmonic sounds with beautiful lyrics is represented through the colors I mix, always using my intuition.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: What are some of the materials you use to create your handbags?
SM: I use canvas, denim, waterproof fabrics, and cotton. I like to experiment with any fabric, except animal furs. The paint makes different textures depending on the fabric that I am working; for example, in cotton the texture is soft to the tact, and I have had good response from my customers when I transform cotton.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: How do you choose your rich color palette?
SM: This is the most fantastic part of my job, cause I enjoy it. I choose my color palette depending on the mood and my inspiration, but always basing the combinations on primary colors. Also, I mixed three or five colors at the same time, and if they are opposite that's all the better, because I like to create new ones, based on the season or the inspiration point.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: When did you first discover your love of fashion and your capability as a designer?
SM: I've been painting since I was 5 years old, because my father is a painter. When I was a child, I was the little one of my family, so my way to have fun was to paint.
But I studied journalism in college and I stopped painting for a while and I began to miss my passion. When I finished college, I worked in an editorial position. I had the opportunity to get to know the fashion world and I fell in love with it. So, I decided to study Fashion design. However, before I studied it, I made 10 handbags that I sold to my cousins and friends, and my father told me that I had a skill to paint fabrics. He motivated me to study fashion design, and I realized that this is the love of my life along with my two sweet dogs.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Have you had any formal training in sewing?
SM: Yes, recently I finished my studies in Fashion Design. I studied for four years and I learned to sew and to illustrate, which is my other passion. Now I am beginning to create artistic fashion illustrations for some magazines.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: What designers do you admire?
SM: This is a tough one, because there are many designers that I admire. Edith Head is one, I like her work very much, and the fact that she worked as costume designer for Alfred Hitchcok`s movies makes her a fashion legend for me. Also, I like Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Tell us about the design process from beginning to end. What is a typical day for you?
SM: First, I sketch the design with colors. Then I make a pattern to cut the fabric. The second, and my favorite one, is to paint the fabric. This is the moment when I disconnect my mind and my soul and relax myself painting and mixing colors to create something very personal. The last step is to sew the handbag.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: What has been your experience since being featured on Handbag Designer 101?
SM: I have to say that since I graduated that has been the best experience, because I have had good and positive responses from the people. For example, this interview is very motivating to me and the fact that other countries are going to know my work is the best part of it. Also handbag designer 101 grants you the opportunity to know people in the fashion business and that is the idea when you are establishing your brand.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Now for the personal stuff. Where is your favorite place in the world?
SM: London. I would like to live there and establish my brand.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: What is your favorite color?
SM: Purple

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Describe a good day.
SM: A good day is when I can do whatever I want with my time, and the most important part of that day is that I could go to walk with my two dogs.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: Describe a not so good day.
SM: A not so good day is when someone that I care about gets sick.

FA’SHOE’NISTA: And the final, clichéd question. What advice would you give to aspiring fashionites and fledgling handbag designers such as myself?
SM: I think the perfect advice is that you have to listen to your inner voice, don´t listen to anybody but you. Only you know what makes you happy and you only do things well when you are satisfied with your work. I did that and changed my profession despite all my family’s advice. I listened my to inner voice and I am really happy with my second profession.

The must have trend for the 2009 fall fashion season is, drum roll please...you guessed it...RED. Red for evening, Red for casual, and my personal favorites, Red shoes and handbags. Red suede, leather, satin, you name it--richly saturated Reds are breathing life into many a fashionista's closet.

Below are some of the more edgy pieces that stoked my fancy. Though each featured designer is as talented as the next and their pieces are much to be desired, my personal favorite is Valentino. This Fall seasons Armani Collezioni is an amazing blend of tight, straight lines and billowy, flowing silhouettes. Nina and Nicholas

If Nicholas Kirkwood is the king of architectural avante-garde design, then Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci is surely the Prince of ethereal edginess.

Unfortunately(?), this last fall 2009 RTW collection for Nina Ricci is the signature finale for the Brussels born Theyskens. The young designer, a design school drop out, launched his own line in 1997, had Madonna to wear one of his gowns for the 1998 Academy Awards, and then was forced by economic woes to shut down. Then in 2002, Theyskens went on to further develop his design expertise as creative director for Proctor and Gamble's fashion division, Rochas. But once again, he was forced out after Proctor and Gamble discontinued this division in 2006. A mere four months later, he joined Nina Ricci for a shot at commercial success.

I like how Theyskens combines sharply tailored lines with soft flowing femininity. His leather jacket is less biker chick and more glam rock with a touch of goth. Still, paired with a flowing chiffon number, or soft, loose fitting pants, the look is both edgy with a chic, tough girl sensibility--I'm beautiful and feminine, but if you say the wrong thing, there could be trouble.

With each collection, Theyskens has given us fashion forward, yet very wearable designs (except for maybe the sheer dresses with see-through tops). I can't wait to see what his next move will be.

And...

As you well know by now, I heart Nicholas Kirkwood. The 28 year old British shoe designer, is definitely the hot topic these days, and with good reason. Having collaborated with such notables as Chloe', Phillip Lim and Rodarte, the young designer is now creative director of accessories at Pollini.

If I may be so bold, Kirkwood is just as easy on the eyes as his shoes. I enjoy looking at him about as much as I do his designs. A true tastemaker, Kirkwood takes his footwear to new heights with every collection. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the high priest of stilettos is about to launch his first flat shoe. How different is that? Can't wait to see it.

The Passing of a Legend: First Black Super Model, Naomi Sims, dies at 61

In 1968, I was ten years old. Even then, I was a fashion magazine-a-holic. Though I was in love with the likes of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, even I knew that something, or someone was sorely missing. There weren't any models that looked like me. Then one day, this changed. Suddenly, gracing the cover of Ladies Home Journal and Life Magazine was a woman that I considered to be the most beautiful creature I'd ever laid my young and impressionable eyes on.

Fashion industry pioneer, Naomi Sims, died on this past Saturday from a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 61 years young.

First of all, I have to say that I am appalled at the lack of news coverage. I know she wasn't Michael Jackson or Farah Fawcett, but if it weren't for this determined, confident, and brave spirit, we would not be privy to the likes of Iman, Naomi Campbell, and Chanel Iman, just to name a few. This great woman and the first black supermodel opened doors too numerous to mention in one blog post or in a single volume book for that matter. Her impact on the history of the Fashion Industry is undeniable.

It's hard to believe that her modeling career only lasted 5 years before she gave up the catwalk to become a successful beauty industry entrepreneur. She was muse to many top designers of her day, such as Giorgio di Sant'Angelo, Bill Blass, and is known most notably for her close professional relationship with then reigning king of night-life fashion, Halston. After a prestigious and uncanny career in front of the camera, Sims went on to develop a multi-million-dollar business as connoisseur of beauty for women of color.

Not too shabby for a young, gangly, dark skinned black girl from Oxford, Mississippi. Born in 1948, Sims overcame many obstacles from her troubled childhood, including her parent's divorce shortly after her birth, a move to Pittsburgh, and her mother's ensuing illness which led to painful stints in foster homes.

Instead of allowing her circumstance to tear down her self-esteem, Naomi Sims used the unpleasantness of her younger years to propel her into her destiny. After graduating from Westinghouse High School, she followed her older sister, Betty, to New York. She made the conscious decision to become, simply put, "somebody really important."1

In an industry that, at a tumultuous time in Black American history, had very little use for black models, Naomi Sims literally knocked down doors and busted through barriers. A scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology landed her in New York in 1966. Her quest to make some much needed cash was met with many a slammed door as agency after agency rejected her attempts at being signed as a model.

A smart and timely collaboration with Wilhelmina Cooper, an ex-model starting her own modeling agency led to $1000 a week earnings within the year for the young model. A national television campaign for AT&T soon followed and the "new face of fashion" was born.

Naomi Sims understood better than most the need for black women to experience glamor and a style that was uniquely their own. Her high quality, beautifully made wigs afforded women of color the opportunity to change their look with styles that accentuated their features. Sims eventually expanded her empire by becoming the author of 5 books on beauty and modeling.

The Fashion and Beauty Industry has lost one of its greatest representatives. Naomi Sims was living proof that your environment, no matter how difficult or uninspiring, does not have to dictate your destiny. Ms. Sims opened the doors for many a young black aspiring model to realize her dreams and to set her entrepreneurial goals above the stratosphere. Thank you Naomi Sims. You, your beautiful face, and gracious style will be missed.
